Great lesson in communication and listening January 2, 2014 By P J LaRue Verified Purchase I. M. Frightful Story of Water Witch by Dvora Swickle is a picture book great for Halloween, but also carries a valuable message that can be taught throughout the year. Ian learns that his family needs a dowser to find a new well, but he is not listening carefully. As he shares this information with friends, the tale morphs, and Ian is afraid his house will be flooded by the water witch. As he relays the story to his friends, with each telling, Ian becomes more terrified.
Ms. Swickle weaves a tale that reflects on the importance of listening and asking the right questions. This book is highly recommended for small children, both boys and girls. And, Ian is scared in the story, the book is written at a level that will not scare the little ones.

Made Me Smile February 14, 2014 By Karen Magill When I started to read this book, I began to remember what it was like when I was a child.
I.M. Frightful could be any little boy – or girl – learning how to survive. When he misunderstands what his father tells him and thinks a witch is coming to visit on Halloween, he is naturally frightened. The truth is a little different of course.
Ms. Swickle teaches a lesson to her young readers in an entertaining manner. Just what children’s books should do.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Not at all Frightful...but Delightful :-) February 15, 2014 By brenda Verified Purchase I really enjoy the authors clear and easy writing style. This book, I. M. Frightful Story of Water Witch is an adorable story with great illustrations that really pull it's young reader in. I like that there are questions for children to answer. It really makes this a fun interactive book.
Even though I am not a child I was really charmed and entertained. There are important basic lessons shared in this book, making it more than just a silly little children's book. It's educational and amusing. The messages are practical and can be applied to daily life. Learning to pay attention and listen is a really valuable lesson. Also, learning to ask the right questions. Even though this book has a halloween vibe it can be enjoyed all year round and the good thing is that it is not at all scary. That is something that should make parents happy to share with their young boys or girls.
"I.M.," she said, "You need to take more time concentrating during conversations. Ask more questions, my dear, before your imagination runs away from you again." Mother repeated what father had told him. Then I.M. asked more questions and now knew all the facts."
4.0 out of 5 stars Listening with both ears October 14, 2014 By K. Springs An interesting children's story about not listening with both ears. I. M. Frightful Story of the Water Witch starts out with I. M. being told that a diviner was coming. His father tried to explain what this is, but I.M. only absorbed part of the story and believes a water witch will fill the house with water. As his friends ask questions he doesn't know the answers to, he fills in the blanks from his fertile imagination. Then he finally meets the water witch.
A well written children's tale about paying attention so you have information instead of using your imagination to fill in the blanks. Perfect for a younger audience. Embellish and make it up of course! This story takes on a trip on what occurs. The illustrations were very cute, and I really enjoyed the blend of delightful story with little breaks in learning (count the patches on the pants as well as "Where's Waldo" type activities). This also goes to show it's better to ask questions when you don't know the whole story or just to not eavesdrop on your parents' conversation.
Sunday, November 25, 2012 Monday Musings: The Legend of Santa Owl, a review
The Legend of Santa Owl, by Dvora Swickle, is a cute holiday children's book. I will be honest, children's books are not the normal genre that I read. I haven't had small children for a number of years. However, I do have four and five year old grandchildren.
The story follows a squirrel, named Norman, as he discovers the holiday celebrated by humans, known as Christmas, with the help of his friend Ollie the Owl.
The story would appeal to younger children in the toddler age to Kindergartenish group vs. young readers. What I like about the book is the author leaves opportunity for discussion about friends, animals, Santa Claus, and Christmas in general.
From a child's point of view, the book is cute, and doesn't require deep thought to understand the basic theme. In my opinion, the book is written for the pure entertainment of children.
It does seem to have some technical flaws, but I don't think children will notice them. That's the point anyway; entertainment of children. Overall, if I were to rate the book, I would give it four stars, based on layout, and difficulty in reading. I expected more of a poetic read based on the layout of the words, but I'm not a children's book reader, so I wouldn't read too much into that statement.
I read this book to my grandchildren and they enjoyed it very much. I can't tell you their favorite parts because I don't believe in spoilers. However, my granddaughter really liked the little squirrel, and my grandson thoroughly enjoyed the owl. They both liked Santa Claus and the reindeer. We had a great time together laughing and talking about each page. I would recommend this children's book for young children.
Thank you so much Melissa Keir and your class. I had a great time making the video's for your classroom.
Nanny reading a Dvora Swickle book to her babies — with Joann Calderone, Rachel Marie Sparks, and Timothy Neal. How special just how I pictured it. Thank you for bringing my stories into the lives of these young bebeautiful smiles. I am humbled!
*Lullaby* Review by Joyce Rosenfield
As I listened to Dvora Swickle singing her rendition of Lullaby, joy filled my heart. She sang the song with such harmony and passion, one would've thought that she was actually singing it to a child. It's certainly a song one would want to play for their little one at bedtime. The Lullaby song was truly sung with such beauty and emotion. It was a pleasure to hear Dvora Swickle sing. Joyce Rosenfield

The Wormy Story
Melisa Neal Buggie 4 Book
Three times in less than 12 hours! That is how many times I have read this story to my favorite 3 1/2 yr. old. It is the story of a worm and his friend the fish. You might ask his friend? Well it is true. However, I can't tell you why or how as I don't want to give it away. However, I can recommend this book. From an adults point of view it is short, illustrated well and just a nice story. From a 3 1/2 yr. old perspective it is "coolio". She has put in her request for it again tonight and probably will sometime again today. Read it you will like it.

A truly touching and educational read for all ages........, April 22, 2014 By De Ann Townes Jr. "Native American Indian who is a Poet, Author, Artist" Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Heckamaor the Turtle (Kindle Edition) A heartwarming story of being different, being acceptant of yourself and of others. This is a great message of friendship. Longing to be a friend and have friends, and how your words and actions can truly hurt others. I love how Author Dvora Swickle was able to ask certain questions that teach children the basics on counting, learning their colors, and how to be observant. What a truly touching and educational read for children of all ages. ~WaAr~

I just read your book "Bug And A Bottle" I liked the colorful pictures, I especially liked the picture of the hand sort of pointing or holding the bug. I think the book would be a good read aloud book for toddler's with the pictures a good focus point for them, as the story is read. And I think that it is a helpful reminder to toddler's to not wander away from home, because they may get trapped or more they bargained for, just as the "little bug" in the story did. I also think that the poems I read on this site are neat, I really liked the one called "Snookies" And last I think the author of these books and poems is very nice.
